Joanna Ryde on holiday in Bratislava

Bratislava

Slovakia

Meself and Gloria got the train from Vienna which is only 50 minutes away. Just to point out that the iron curtain isn’t really a curtain, or iron for that matter. Ragin’!

WHERE TO STAY

I’m not even jokin’ ya, ya have to stay in the Hotel Kyjev. It’s a bit of a dive I’ll be honest but it was the most important hotel in all of Czechoslovakia when the communists were here so I’m told. Its 17 stories high and its really like steppin’ back in time. Fair enough, ya could stay in the Radisson or one of them fancy places in the old town but wheres the adventure in that? I spent half the time pretendin’ I was a spy. Gas. Although the receptionist didn’t think so.

WHERE TO EAT

There’s a great choice of places to grab a bite in Bratislava. We got something in the food court in the shoppin’ centre. There seems to be a McDonalds on every street and they’re mad for their kebabs like the rest of this part of the world. There’s a Tesco right under the Hotel Kyjev so we grabbed a few bits and pigged out in the room. I wouldn’t mind but €11 goes real far in Sovakia, especially if it’s Tesco.

WHERE TO DRINK

Bratislava is after overtakin’ Dublin as the hen and stag capital of Europe so as ya can imagine, there’s a load of strip bars and that kinda thing. There’s the Dubliner Irish bar as well in the old town where we ended up doin’ the bit of karaoke. At last somewhere in Central Europe who appreciates a bit of The Nolans.

WHAT TO DO

Bratislava Castle is lovely although there’s a bit of a walk up to it. We ended up bumpin’ into an Arabian fella doin’ medicine in the Royal College of Surgeons. It’s a small world isn’t it. I was tryin’ to chat him up but Gloria went and ruined it by walkin’ off, the bitch. The old town is nice too and grand for a bit of a walk. There’s a big shoppin’ centre as well but cloths and that are the same price or dearer than Ireland. Food, smokes and Red Bull are a lot cheaper though so stock up!

OTHER TIPS

Look past the communist thing. It’s not 1978. Stock up on the cigarettes. 4 times cheaper than Dublin.
